WE CORDIALLY INVITE YOU TO SERVE THE EAST
Written by Isaac Goh, Translated by Earnest Chiam
The mission of Serve The East (STE) is to encourage Malaysian Chinese churches towards a holistic cross-cultural mission, to care for and serve the marginalized indigenous people and journey together with the indigenous churches. We long to see the indigenous people being transformed and rise-up, and unity among the Chinese and Indigenous churches being enhanced.
Even though 2022 is still under the shroud of pandemic uncertainty, we remain committed to the visions and mission entrusted by God. Through various multi-faceted strategies to promote Yuan-Han Journeying Together, we cordially invite you to join us in this gospel ministry. How can you contribute and be a part of this ministry? We believe you can participate in any o the seven projects we propose as below.
1) Short Term Experiential Learning Mission Trip
Sabah has opened its border to those who have been fully vaccinated. If you have never participated in any cross-cultural mission, we encourage churches to organize mission trips to rural indigenous villages to experience cross-cultural missions. The mission team can touch base with the indigenous people, gain knowledge about the mission field and have dialogue with the mission workers there. We urge you to step out of the four walls of your church into the journey of cross-cultural experiential learning ministries.
2）Visitation and Observation Trip
If churches wish to support and participate in the indigenous mission work, we encourage the pastoral leaders to pay a visit to the rural indigenous villagers in Sabah. Church leaders can observe, get in touch with the leaders of the indigenous churches, understand their context and needs, and seek God's leading on how He can use your church to journey with the indigenous people.
3) Volunteering at the Indigenous Village
We invite you to volunteer in the rural indigenous village, by offering your time, energy, gifts and talents, to teach children about Bible, serve in companionship classes, lead the young people, care for the families in need, provide skills training and others. Do not waste the resources God has given to you, but allow God to use you as a channel of blessings to the indigenous communities.
4) Cross-cultural Discipleship Training at Micah Centre
In cross-cultural missions, it is not good enough just to have prompting and passion in heart. To serve the indigenous people effectively on a long-term basis, you need to be trained and equipped. Micah Centre offers you with such training. We build disciples' lives, train cross-cultural adaptability, and provide practical experience in mission field work. We hope to nurture more young people to be competent mission workers to journey with the indigenous people.
5) Special Topical Sharing on Yuan-Han Journeying Together (once every 2 months)
This year, we are honoured to have Pastor Lam Kee Hing to share a series of teachings on empowerment. He will share on how indigenous churches can be empowered in areas of spirituality, economy, education, health, community and leadership. Through the sharing of Pastor Lam, who has served the indigenous people for more than 30 years, we hope to help Chinese churches to see the needs of indigenous churches and how they can get involve in empowering the indigenous communities. We welcome your participation!
6) Funding the Indigenous Education Ministries
Education is one of the effective strategies to empower the indigenous people. Together with the SIB Preschool Education Ministry, we adopt several indigenous kindergartens by supporting the teachers' salaries and the basic facilities of the kindergartens. We also set up companionship classes in the rural area to help the disadvantaged indigenous children in their studies, and at the same time assist in nurturing their characters. We call on you to provide financial support for the indigenous education ministries.
7) Yuan-Han Journeying Together Seed Fund
This year, we set up a Tabung Benih to provide financial support to the indigenous people, to assist them in overcoming crisis and difficult situations. The fund will be used to support underprivileged pastors, sponsor for theological education, assist families in need, finance economic empowerment projects etc. We hope to raise RM40,000 this year and we appeal for your kind contribution towards the seed fund.
If God moves you to participate in any of the above ministries, please get in touch with our co-workers.
